About ACT
Advanced Clutch Technology (ACT) is a clutch and flywheel manufacturer based in Lancaster, California. Founder Dirk Starksen worked his way up from assembler and machinist to general manager at Kennedy Engineered Products before starting ACT as a side business in 1994, bringing years of hands-on clutch manufacturing experience to the new company.
ACT operates from a 22,000 sq ft facility where it manufactures its own diaphragm springs, while its clutch kits and flywheels are designed, tested and assembled in-house. ACT marked its 25th anniversary in 2019. The company's lineup covers everything from street-friendly upgraded pressure plates and organic discs to sprung and unsprung race discs, multi-disc setups and lightweight flywheels for modified manual-transmission cars.
ACT and the JDM scene
When the import tuner boom put turbo kits and bigger power on Hondas, Nissans, Mitsubishis and Subarus, the stock clutch was often the first part to give up. ACT became one of the go-to US brands for that problem, with application-specific kits for a long list of Japanese platforms. The company describes itself as born from racing, supplying driveline parts to drag racers, competition drift cars and land speed record holders. For drift builds in particular, a clutch that can take repeated clutch kicks is a must.
