About BorgWarner
BorgWarner is one of the largest names in the global auto parts industry. The modern company was formed in 1928 through the merger of several manufacturers, including Borg & Beck, Warner Gear and Long Manufacturing, and it is headquartered today in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange and supplies automakers around the world.
BorgWarner's turbocharger story runs through two well-known names. In 1998 it bought the German turbo specialist KKK (Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch), and in 1999 it acquired Kuhlman Corporation, whose Schwitzer unit made diesel turbochargers. For enthusiasts, that engineering is packaged in two aftermarket lines: the AirWerks series, which includes the popular S200SX, S300SX and S400SX frames, and the EFR (Engineered For Racing) series. BorgWarner's EFR turbocharger has been fitted to every car in the NTT IndyCar Series each season since 2012.
BorgWarner and the JDM scene
When a JDM build outgrows its factory turbo, BorgWarner is one of the first names tuners look at. The EFR line was built for fast spool and response, with features like a mixed-flow gamma-ti turbine wheel and a dual ceramic ball bearing assembly. Sizes like the 6258 and 7163 suit four-cylinder builds such as the SR20DET, 4G63 and EJ, and larger frames like the 8374 and 9180 suit high-horsepower 2JZ and RB builds. The AirWerks S-series covers big single-turbo setups from roughly 220 hp to well over 1,500 hp, so it is a common choice for drag and drift cars running big power.
- EFR 6258 through 9180: response-focused upgrades for street, time attack and drift
- AirWerks S200SX to S500SX: big single-turbo power for 2JZ, RB and similar builds
