About HKS
HKS was founded in 1973 in Japan by Hiroyuki Hasegawa, a former Yamaha Motor engineer, and Goichi Kitagawa. The company is headquartered in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Sigma Automotive supplied startup capital, which is where the HKS name comes from.
HKS has a long list of firsts. It produced the first commercial turbocharger kit for passenger cars in July 1974, and it created the first commercially available electronic turbo timer and boost controller. It was also a pioneer of piggyback fuel computers. Today its catalog covers turbo kits and turbochargers, exhausts, intakes, suspension, engine internals, camshafts, electronics and more, and it is still one of the best-known names in Japanese tuning.
HKS and the JDM scene
HKS's race history includes some of the best-known cars in JDM tuning. In 1983 its twin-turbo Celica XX, the HKS M300, became the first Japanese car to exceed 300 km/h. Its "oil slick" R32 GT-R won a Group A race at Sugo in 1992, and the T-002 R33 GT-R set a Tsukuba lap record of 58.71 seconds in 1995. In 2001, the HKS-sponsored S15 Silvia driven by Nobuteru Taniguchi won the very first D1 Grand Prix championship. The HKS Drag R33 GT-R ran a 7.67-second quarter mile the same year. In 2018 the TRB-03 Toyota 86 broke the 50-second barrier at Tsukuba with a 49.44.
